Attention students! Read on for changes to the 2024-2025 FAFSA

What is the FAFSA Simplification Act?

● The FAFSA Simplification Act is a law that has made it easier than ever for students to complete the FAFSA form and receive financial aid for college and help more students from low-income backgrounds receive Pell Grants. Here are some of the major changes that will be in effect starting the 2024-2025 FSA award year:

○ The new form typically opens on October 1st, but due to undergoing changes the ’24-25 FAFSA form will open December 2023

○ Federal Tax information (FTI) will be transferred directly from the internal revenue service (IRS)

○ Certain students can establish independent student status and not provide parental information on the FAFSA

○ Students with an adjusted gross income (AGI) below specified levels can automatically qualify for the MAX Pell Grant

○ The expected family contributions (EFC) will change to student aid index (SAI)—Students who do not qualify for a Pell Grant based on their AGI can still qualify for a Pell Grant based on their SAI.

○ Incarcerated students in a federal or state penal institution will be able to receive a Pell Grant as long as the correctional institution has prison education programs.○ Eliminates prohibitions for students with certain drug-related offenses and students who failed to register for the Selective Service

What’s changed for the 2024–25 FAFSA® form?

There are six key changes coming to the FAFSA form:

1. A spouse or stepparent may need to participate in your FAFSA form as a contributor. Contributor is a new term being introduced for the 2024–25 FAFSA form. A contributor refers to the student, the student’s spouse, a biological or adopted parent, the parent’s spouse (stepparent). A Contributor is NOT a grandparent, foster parents, legal guardian, brother or sister, aunt or uncle, even if they helped provide for or raise the student.

2. Your federal tax information will now be transferred directly from the IRS into the form. This information will be used to determine your eligibility for federal student aid and shared with schools and state higher education agencies to prepare financial aid offers.

3. For this transfer to happen, you and your contributors must provide consent and approval on the FAFSA form. This is a new requirement, and if consent and approval aren’t provided, you will not be eligible for federal student aid. Even if one of your contributors doesn’t have a Social Security number, didn’t file taxes, or filed taxes outside of the U.S. consent and approval are still required.

4. You and your contributors will each need to have your own account username and password to access and complete the online FAFSA form. Contributors who don’t have a Social Security number can still create a account to fill out their sections on the FAFSA form. But remember, you must be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen to be eligible for federal student aid.

5. Once your FAFSA form has been started, you will now be able to view the status, including contributor progress in your account.

6. Finally, when you complete the online FAFSA form, your information can now be sent to more schools, with the option to select up to 20 colleges, career schools, or trade schools.
